Two truths and a lie online
In short
Two truths and a lie online means writing three statements about yourself, two true and one false, for a stranger to guess during a video call. On decal, both of you write at the same time so neither can copy the other, then each picks which of the other person’s three statements is the lie. A correct guess earns a point, and the score carries for the length of the call.
Two truths and a lie online, explained
Two truths and a lie is an old party game built around a simple bet: you can lie convincingly enough to pass as the truth, and the other person can tell the difference. Doing it online with a stranger sharpens that bet, because neither of you has years of knowing each other to fall back on. Every statement is new information, which makes the lie genuinely harder to guess, and genuinely harder to tell.
On decal, it is one of the three mini-games you can open during a call, next to tic-tac-toe and truth or dare, and it starts the same way they do: with an invite the other person can accept or decline.
The rules, exactly as decal plays them
Unlike the other two mini-games, this one is not played turn by turn. Both of you write at the same time:
- Write three statements about yourself, then mark which one is false. The interface shows the kind of thing that works as an example while you type, things like “I’ve seen the northern lights” or “I’m scared of pigeons.”
- Submit when ready, and wait. You cannot see the other person’s statements until both sides have sent theirs, so there is no way to shape your lie around what they already wrote.
- Read the other person’s three statements and pick the one you think is false.
- Both lies are revealed together, points go to whoever guessed correctly, and the score stays on screen for the rest of the call.
How to write a lie that is hard to catch
The statements people guess wrong share a pattern: the lie sits at the same level of detail and the same ordinary tone as the two truths around it. A lie that sounds suspiciously impressive, or suspiciously boring, stands out before the other person even has to think about it.
- Match the specificity of your truths. “I speak 3 languages” works as either a truth or a lie precisely because it is stated plainly, with no extra flourish either way.
- Avoid the two obvious failure modes: a lie too wild to be believed, and a lie too flat to be interesting. Both get guessed correctly more often than a lie that simply sounds ordinary.
- Keep all three statements roughly the same length. A lie that is noticeably shorter or longer than the truths next to it draws attention for the wrong reason.
Why playing it on video changes the game
A written version of this game removes half the fun: on a call, the other person sees your face while you write, submit, and then watch them read your statements back. Reading their reaction while they guess, and showing nothing while they read yours, is most of what makes it work as a video game rather than a text one.
Nothing about the round is kept once the call ends. The statements you write stay part of the conversation for as long as the chat lasts, the same as any message, which is what makes it possible to report something written there, exactly as talking to strangers on video already works outside of any game.
If this is not the right game, and where to play
A faster, more competitive option is tic-tac-toe on a video call, and a game built around light dares and honest answers is truth or dare online. All three sit together on the video chat games page. If you are still choosing where to meet a stranger on video in the first place, our Omegle alternatives page covers that. Otherwise, start from the decal home page, and the Games button will be waiting under the video the moment you connect with someone.
Common questions
What are the rules of two truths and a lie?
Each person writes three statements about themselves, two true and one false, and marks which one is the lie before sending. Once both sides have submitted, you each see the other’s three statements and guess which one is false. A correct guess earns a point.
How do I write a lie that is hard to spot?
Keep it as plausible and specific as your true statements, with the same level of detail and the same ordinary tone. A lie that is obviously more dramatic, or obviously duller, than the other two gives itself away before anyone has to think.
Can I see the other person’s statements before writing mine?
No. Both of you write at the same time, hidden from each other, and your three statements lock in once sent. Neither side can shape their own lie around what the other already wrote.
Is there a time limit to write my statements?
No. You can take as long as you need. The only countdown in the whole game is the 30 seconds the other person gets to accept or decline the initial invite to play.
What happens if someone leaves mid-game?
The round ends immediately, with no points recorded for it. Nothing about an unfinished round is kept once the call ends.
Is two truths and a lie free on decal?
Yes, for every account, exactly like the rest of video chat and the other two mini-games.
