Chatroulette alternatives, and how to choose one

Chatroulette launched around 2009 to 2010, built by Andrey Ternovskiy. It paired strangers by video, at random, with a button to move to the next person. That single idea, one connection, one skip, became the template that the entire category still runs on.

It has been operating for well over a decade, which means it also carries the largest brand recognition in the category. Most people searching for a random video chat site know the name first.

Reasons vary by person. Some want a different audience, some want features Chatroulette does not offer, such as matching by shared interests. Others simply want to compare options before settling on one, which is reasonable given how many sites now use the same format.

The format is identical across most of these sites. What differs, and what actually matters, is what happens around it:

• whether an account is required, which discourages someone banned from simply returning
• whether video is moderated before broadcast or only after a report

None of these publish detailed, verifiable figures on their audience size or their moderation process that we can point to, so we are not going to invent numbers on their behalf.
