Play tic-tac-toe on a video call

In short

Tic-tac-toe on a video call means playing the classic 3x3 grid against a stranger while still seeing and hearing them, as one of decal’s three in-call mini-games. One of you sends an invite, the other accepts or declines within 30 seconds, then you take turns marking squares until someone lines up three or the grid fills. The score carries across rounds for the length of the call, and either side can ask for a rematch.

Tic-tac-toe on a video call, the idea

Tic-tac-toe does not need an introduction, and that is exactly why it works well mid-call: no rules to explain, no setup, just a 3x3 grid that both of you can see and play at the same time as talking. It gives a conversation a quick, competitive beat without asking either of you to come up with anything to say.

That makes it a different tool from the other two mini-games. It does not ask anyone to write anything or answer a personal question, which is useful the moment a conversation needs a break rather than a deeper topic, or when you want something to do together in the thirty seconds right after connecting with someone new, before you know whether the chat has anywhere else to go.

On decal, it is one of the three mini-games you can open during a call, alongside truth or dare and two truths and a lie, and it opens the same way they do: with an invite the other person has to agree to first.

The rules, exactly as decal plays them

  • Nine squares, three in a row wins. Line up three marks across, down, or on a diagonal before the other person does.
  • You alternate turns, each picking an empty square on their go. The winning line lights up the moment it forms.
  • Whoever accepts the very first invite goes first. From the round after, the first move switches to the other person, win or lose, so the same person is not always starting.
  • A full grid with no line is a draw, worth nothing to either side, and you move straight to a rematch if you want one.

How to start a round, step by step

The Games button sits with the other round buttons under the video, on a computer and on a phone alike. It only shows up once the person you are talking to is also on a version of decal that can display the mini-games.

  • Press Games and pick tic-tac-toe from the list of three.
  • The other person sees the name of the game, with a bar counting down 30 seconds to accept or decline.
  • If they accept, the grid opens next to the video, and you keep seeing and hearing each other the whole time.
  • Tap any empty square on your turn, and the game plays out from there, no further setup needed.

Scores, rematches, and leaving mid-round

The score stays on screen for the length of the call, adding up win by win across as many rematches as you want. Offering one takes a single tap once a round ends, and the other person accepts or declines it exactly like the first invite, including the 30-second window to answer.

Closing the game panel or leaving the call stops everything instantly. Nothing about a round in progress is saved, and there is no way to resume it later, on decal or elsewhere.

If you want a different pace

For something slower and more personal, try truth or dare online or two truths and a lie. All three mini-games are covered on the main video chat games page. If you are still deciding where to have the call in the first place, our Omegle alternatives page, or our broader guide to talking to strangers on video, are good places to start. Otherwise, head to the decal home page and the Games button will be waiting under the video the moment you connect with someone.

Common questions

How do you play tic-tac-toe on decal?

Press the Games button, pick tic-tac-toe from the list, and wait for the other person to accept. Once they do, you take turns tapping an empty square, and the game ends when three squares in a row match or the grid fills up.

Who goes first?

Whoever accepts the very first invite in a room plays first. After that, the first move simply alternates each new round, regardless of who won the one before.

What happens if nobody wins?

If the grid fills up with no line of three, it is a draw. No point is awarded to either side, and you can start a new round with a rematch.

Can we play more than one round?

Yes. Either of you can offer a rematch once a round ends, and the score keeps adding up for as long as the call lasts.

Is tic-tac-toe free on decal?

Yes, for every account, exactly like the rest of video chat and the other two mini-games.

What happens if one of us leaves mid-round?

The round ends immediately, with no winner recorded. Nothing about an unfinished round is kept once the call ends.
